Song Spotlight: Lyla George's loose ends (a night at The Airliner Bar)

Lyla George took a flight out from New Orleans to Los Angeles and ended up at The Airliner Bar. This was a School Night showcase event (collaboration between Make Out Music and KCRW). Interestingly enough, the previous time I attended a School Night event, New Orleans based singer Olivia Barnes was on the bill. I've got to give it up to the New Orleans music scene.

What I immediately noticed was that her friends rushed the front of the stage as she was setting up. That is always a good sign. Her set included songs from her debut album Soup for Lunch as well as unreleased material. The Soup for Lunch title has a backstory. While she was working on her album in New Orleans, she would walk to a grocery store that was 25 minutes away. She did not own a car. She would buy canned soup. That is a heavy load to be carrying back. While tuning between songs, she was asked what her favorite soup is. She responded that it was Amy's Organic Soups - specifically the French Country Vegetable (sounds so New Orleans) and Hearty Rustic Italian Vegetable.

Crowd comment of the set: We're obsessed with you.

Another crowd comment of the set: Who is obsessed with her? Raise your hands.

Her song "lovedry" had those in the crowd singing passionately along with her. They sang along, but fell short of matching her operatic vocals. The song makes reference to grocery runs, holding hands in grocery stores. She takes care to tune her guitars perfectly. Prior to ending her set with "faucet," she mentioned that she usually has three guitars on stage. One particularly for that song, which has a specific tuning. Just like the song title, she played the guitar in a manner that made it sound like water flowing.

Her Spotify bio says nothing about her music, but tells about her "recurring dream where im a ballerina in a big tutu made of giant purple bananas." What is does not say is that she often uses nature imagery in her lyrics. The Song Spotlight goes to "loose ends" that has a New Orleans' blues sound that paints a picture by mentioning a cypress tree. Finding a relationship is difficult in New Orleans.
