Review: Chalk Teeth has a Black Celebration at Licorice Pizza Records

I first came across Chalk Teeth back in April. After seeing their set, I wrote up one of my Song Spotlight posts for their song "Floor It." Ever since that point in time, I've wanted to catch another set. I know I've had other opportunities to catch a set, but the timing never worked out. That ended when they had their official record release party (I'm assuming it was their release party) at Licorice Pizza Records for their self-titled debut album. The album came out in June so a little delay in having a party. The band was scheduled at Licorice Pizza a few months back, but had to cancel due to illness.

As describe by their Spotify bio, their music is "shoegaze-tinged, motorik dark wave. Black glass synths, washed in noise-rock guitar, with Polish vocals, propelled by relentless drum machine pulses." With that description, it is not surprising that the band was dressed in all black. I would say over half the crowd got the dress code message before hand and were also decked out in black. There were a spattering of people dressed in white. Then there were the outliners like myself who were unaware of the required dress code -- I came in blue. I am surprised I wasn't kicked out.

The band is fronted by Polish born Karolina Wallace. She also happens to be a fashion model. The two passions were combined when it came to my Song Spotlight "Floor It." She arranged a veil (black, of course) on her head and did a fashion walk out into the crowd. When inspiration arose, she dropped to her knees and sang with passion.

With reverb on high, people in the back of the venue were dancing to the dark beats. There were others taking selfies to commemorate the night.

"Thank you for being here," ended the front to back performance of their album.

Out in the crowd was Taleen Kali and Megan Sutherland of Wavelords.

Prior to the set, there was an infant on the floor, learning some crawling skills. Every time the infant got about 5 feet away from the mother, the baby was picked up and the process started again. Just making an assumption that a parent of the infant is in the band. Could be wrong. It was a cute moment to see.
