Song Spotlight: Girlfriend, Wife's Focus (a night at Zebulon)

It was a Pretty But Wicked showcase night at Zebulon that featured dream pop duo Girlfriend, Wife (a collaboration between Kacy Hill and Tessa DeNicola). Kacy Hill has been releasing music for around a decade. This new duo continues her artistic expression.

The band focused on songs from their 2026 debut album God Made Me A Star. They also played their most recent release "Slow Dancing" as well as an unreleased song with the placeholder title "Concrete" - it was mentioned that there might be a name change made.

What did I notice? The choreography. There was definitely some hard work put into the performance. It went from the simple where arms swayed in rhythm to stretching out each other's microphone wires. Then there were two three-step staircases that were pressed up against each other. The duo did some ballet-modern dance worthy moves on the platforms.

What else did I notice? The lights went from bright white to red to blue, e meant to blend perfectly with the performance. When the set ended and the band was walking off stage, Tessa gave a shout out to Kacy, "Kacy programmed the lights." 

To me, both of the choreography and lights indicated how much effort they put into their set. 

A song to highlight is "Fly Away" that was the song that started off the collaboration.

Comment of the set: Making a list of the best dressed and worst dressed audience members. And putting it on social media. We might release it on our vinyl. Just think about which side of the list you might belong to.

I almost went into hiding. I'm rather sure I am always one of the worst dressed people at a concert.  

The Song Spotlight goes to "Focus." A potential boyfriend or husband just failed to make his move fast enough. During a date, was the guy too focused on betting the horses at Santa Anita Park?
