A couple weeks back I got to photograph Tommy Newport at The Bellwether. I was there covering Pond for US Rocker Music. You can read my article here. I got to capture a photo that I think is a rather cool shot of the singer.

Often times when I'm shooting a band, be it at a big venue or a small venue, I like to capture the full band. So one of the lenses that I always pack with me is the Canon RF 15-35mm. I don't always use it so sometimes it is just adding weight to my camera bag.
At The Bellwether, I only was allowed to stay in the photo pit for the first three songs -- sort of standard. I had three lenses with me and for each song, I switched to a different lens. For this photo, I was off to the side of the stage and had my 15-35mm lens. I was wanting to capture the full band, which on a big stage like The Bellwether is easier to do from the side versus dead middle.
Luckily for me, Tommy Newport headed in my direction. What I love about the photo is how he is leaning every so slightly and his right arm is angled while holding the microphone. He's right up front with his guitarist and bassist in the frame.
What do I think would have made it ever so slightly better? If I had backed up just a smidge, I would have captured his whole shoe versus cutting off a touch of it. I don't think I could have angled my camera down any, because there isn't much room at the top of the frame. My one excuse for not having more space at the top and bottom of the photo is that it was difficult to see how much I was actually capturing. Also, maybe if I had slid over to the right, more of drummer could be seen. From where I was at, you can only see a portion of his head.
My camera settings were 1/200, F/2.8, and a wide 15mm. I've got to say, that's why I love bringing the 15-35mm lens, because in this example I went as wide as possible.
