New Music Alert: Dirty Cakes' "Make Love"

 

Dirty Cakes' lead singer Charley is the main MC for Bands in a Barbershop. You'll often see him on stage telling the audience to be nice to the photographers. 

The band has a new song out called "Make Love." Spend two minutes and 4 seconds listening to this song and you'll be making dirty love. The song drives forward with beating rock sounds. As can be seen in the video, it'll even have cute stick figures in the park making love.

Quarantine Online Sets: Version16

Can there be an online music family in this era of coronavirus? It really does seem like it. The punk rock community that has grown around bands like Spare Parts for Broken Hearts, Ramonda Hammer and Bands in a Barbershop transitioned online for a week where 6 individual singers took the stage at The 6*6*60s house, playing 6 song sets at 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. That's a lot of 6's. The sets were played on The Satellite's Instagram Live page. The line-up was:

Sarah did some extensive Q&As with both the audience and The 6*6*60s. I got to ask a question about if she was self-taught (accidentally typed in thought) or was musically trained. She is self-taught.

Dolly brought a singer-songwriter version to her punk tunes.

Mandla played his guitar strings so hard that I was surprised he didn't bust a string or two. As a side note, I first saw Ugly Sweaters at Broke LA, I miss that festival and hope it comes back at some point in time.

What's the story behind your band? Rock and Roll, Honest & Dangerous . . . Loud, Fuzzy and Fast. While Charley has been kicking around the LA music scene for 7 years now, Rick joined the band after playing with The English Beat and Becky was in The Lunachicks for their first 2 records.

Is there a specific decision the band has made (good or bad) that it feels other bands/artists can learn from? DIY first, we put the live show above all else. We leave it all on the stage, and expect nothing for it. Rock and Roll isn’t a choice or a decision . . . it’s who we are. We embrace that, there is no act or character being played. You can sniff bullshit a mile away . . . our enthusiasm, joy and honesty are a hallmark.

Own unique fact: We played our first show 5 days after the first time we all played together. It was 25 minutes long to a standing room only Maui Sugar Mill Saloon, and we crushed it!

April Ends/May Begins: Local Music Blast - Part 2

For me, the Los Angeles music scene during the transition week between April and May was a real blast. This is part 2 of my adventures.

Tuesday night brought Lizzy Land at Madame Siam. This is an artist I've followed for a few years when she was in the band Mating Ritual. She calls her music experimental pop. That sounds good to me. Her sound reminds me of the sounds from IO Echo and CLARA-NOVA. I was just mesmerized throughout her 30 minute set. Backing her was one of the members from Mating Ritual. It is nice to know that they're all supporting each other.

Opening up that night was Savannah Sgro and YVR. Interesting notes is that Savannah Sgro was raised in Las Vegas. Moved to Nashville and now I'm assuming lives in Los Angeles. YVR is a recently married couple -- one could see the glow on their faces when that was mentioned.

Wednesday night I took a break, but was back at it on Thursday night when I headed off to Zebulon to catch Ever So Android, Crook and Draemings. Interesting fact: I've interviewed all three bands.

Draemings stated they were debuting new music. I don't know. It didn't sound like it. The crowd loved every moment of the set. I loved every moment of the set. If this really is their new music, I have to believe they're going to gain a number of new fans. Okay, I have some "humorous" doubt on the new music claim, because it was all so brilliant. Noticed: Kimi set things off with her leopard imagery and had the crowd renaming the band KIMI!!! KIMI!!!

Draemings

Ever So Android went from a 2-piece duo to a 4-piece band. This only expanded their punk sounds. The one disappointment is that they asked for the lights to be lowered (and the Zebulon already has low lights) and their own stage lights weren't operating properly, which meant my camera didn't have a lot of fun.

I caught Daniel Crook as a solo artist at The Hi Hat and so this was my first time catching the full band. When you first see the band your eyes have to notice the fashion statement, but when the music hits you are pulled into an emotional vortex.

Friday closed out the music run. I got invited to an outdoor event called Shaken Vanity Block Party. On the first Monday of each month, businesses around the 500 block of Hoover Street apparently are given free range to do what they like. So one business has an outdoor music festival. I went down to catch Dirty Cakes and Speed of Light. Both bands rocked out their punk sounds. Dirty Cakes brought the punk sounds of experience. Speed of Light brought the punk sounds of youthful exuberance. Both bands are fixtures at the monthly/bi-monthly shows that are hosted by The Satellite at the American Barbershop in Echo Park.
