NFV Song Spotlight: Memo PST's I Used To Be A Pretty Boy

Memo PST brought the punk to Zebulon. One has to give it up to Secret Fires who booked a great night of music. The night did belong to the headliners Gustaf, but Memo PST was not to be ignored. The band "was formed in 2022 by longtime associates Orville Neeley and Chris Shaw." Neeley takes the electric guitar duties while Shaw handles the vocals and front man responsibilities.

Shaw took those front man responsibilities to mean that he was going to entertain the crowd with not just his vocal prowess, but with a performance to remember. His performance had an out of control (but totally in control) quality to it. He let the momentum of his body carry him across the stage like a punk star on marionette strings. His feet never stopped going in every direction possible and that meant at times his feet were going in different directions. Or others times, they crisscrossed. The only thing holding him up at times was the microphone stand that he swung around with him (or others times held it above his head).

The punk music had the crowd forming a mosh pit. I was up front while the mosh pit took place behind me. Luckily for me, as I prefer not getting pushed around while taking my photos -- not that I won't take a few slams into my back, the mosh pit did not impact me that much. But on my right side and slightly behind me, two individuals did get smacked around a bit. The next things I noticed was that they had moved to my left, which was far safer of a spot. I also notice that one of my friends was no longer on my left side. Where did she go? I took a glance around and noticed that she had taken the place of the two individuals and was now on my right side. She mentioned she loves the pain of bodies bashing into her. I'm not sure if she meant it or not, but obviously she wanted to be as close to the pit as possible.

Their song "I Used To Be A Pretty Boy" was their last song of the night and really got the mosh pit going. Bodies flung around and as the song started off those at the front were pushed forward with half their bodies flinging across the stage. Of course, once again all this just happened inches from me and I was perfectly fine.

Like a good punk song that doesn't want to exhaust the fan base in the mosh pit, the song lasted just a little over 2 minutes. The loud buzzing guitar play of Neeley sent Shaw in circles. When the song ended, he had to untangle his legs from the microphone wires.

I used to be a pretty boy.
And in every photo, I had the perfect glare.
And at every mirror, I had to stop and stare.
I know what they see when they see me.
