Cody's Program had a packed crowd at The Goldfish during a Rocknite LA night. It was partially driven by the backing vocalist Kelly Rose Golden (in a band called Rigby) who had a gaggle of friends surrounding her on stage while the band was setting up. I was hanging out at the stage with my camera, waiting for the band to start their set and I was gently edged out of my spot due to her crowd of friends. I wasn't upset by it. I just found it amusing. As the DJ played the tunes over the sound system, many of them were dancing.

I've got to say, The Goldfish and Rocknite.LA are bringing a fun, music loving crowd to Highland Park. Back before venues shut down, that part of York Blvd was a buzz of activity. Food trucks and street venders filled the area during the night. Maybe I am heading out that way on the wrong nights, but the streets are rather quiet on the nights I'm in that area these days. I'm not sure how long that will last; however. The Goldfish could be a real anchor for the area.

Cody's Program is the moniker for Nico Romero. He's a big Los Angeles Dodgers fan. Wearing a Dodgers baseball cap, he mentioned to the audience that Shohei Ohtani had just hit a walk-off home run against the Atlanta Braves. He also mentioned that he was a big Cody Bellinger fan back in the day and that resulted in the band name.
His music has a sweet spot that borders between alternative pop and Americana. I think which side of that border the music swung was largely driven by band member Kevin Pontrelli. If he took up the electric guitar, the music shifted slightly towards alternative pop. If he took up the steel guitar, the music shifted slightly towards Americana.

The night started off with an amusing moment. Romero, drummer Aaron Inacio, and bassist Cole Brossus were all eying each other. Romero and Inacio in particular were in communication about setting up the pace. The three kicked it off and apparently it did not go as expected as the music quickly ended and they did a restart. That got some hollers from the audience. It set the mood for a fun set.
Their final song "Gym" was a smooth wistful country American tune. The crowd demanded an encore and they got one. Though perhaps thinking about what happened earlier in the set, Romero mentioned that they hadn't practiced the song.

The band played unreleased music, but they do have a video out for the song "She's Got Spirit" that you can watch here. You can watch Romero getting killed by a hybrid vampire / werewolf.
Setlist: Toyota, Karma, Luck, Derby, Dox, Gym
