Note: The Goldfish re-opened a few weeks back. I also recently did a Max Look review of his The Goldfish night. It took a little bit of time for this one to get posted, which was my first 2025 visit to the venue.
It was off to The Goldfish for the first time since February 2024. Prior to venues shutting down in 2020, The Hi Hat occupied the location and I spent a significant amount of timing hanging out there. During that 2020 timeframe, The Hi Hat officially shut down. It was with a sense of relief when another ownership group took over the location and kept it as a music venue. You can read this Buzzbands article about The Goldfish opening up in the back half of 2021 here. Nearly a year passed since I last stepped foot inside the venue, primarily due to the fact that they stopped booking bands. The venue is up and running once again and I do hope the Los Angeles music scene shows the venue some love.

What else did I notice immediately? Jean loved to hug her guitar close, had a stuffed animal connected to her guitar strap, and had a charm hanging from her guitar headstock. Got to notice these small little details.
This was my first time catching a set by Sister Gemini, but the band crossed my radar in late January when I noticed that they were playing a February show at Non Plus Ultra for an event promoted by The Witching Hours. I wasn't able to make that night as I went over to Harvard & Stone to catch Nightjacket and their release show for their song "My Only Heart." (You can read my review of the night here.)

Then when I was scanning through the Permanent Records Roadhouse schedule, I noticed the band was playing a night there. Generally, I don't take notice of bands that I've never seen before playing at various venues across Los Angeles, but in this particular case the band name stood out. Well, when I noticed the band was playing on this particular night at The Goldfish, it definitely gave me additional incentive to make sure I showed up. Now that's a lot of sets played during a short period of time and Jean gave a shoutout to thanked those who had seen all three sets in just a few weeks, "I notice you."

The music is highlighted by the wistful tones of Jean's vocals. That doesn't mean the band can't rock it out. The song "One Room Apartment" is certainly a rocker. "2:45. I'm struggling for peace of mind. Can’t call my friends. They’re probably in bed again." If anyone has read through some of my blog posts, you know I side with the friends in the song when it come to getting a good night's sleep even on nights where I head out to catch live music.
"Elvira" is the focus of this blog post. She mentioned prior to the song that it was Ash Wednesday. "Any recovering Catholics in the audience?" I guess we can guess where she went to church while growing up. With a swing of her hair, the band started off the song. Per my research on the song, it is an apology song. The song appears to be an apology to a girlfriend of a former ex-boyfriend (see below comment of the set)? Was there a rebound romance going on? "Six hours in the middle of the night. It's nothing. Are you sure your girlfriend wouldn't mind?" The song has cool guitar riffs and bass backing during the instrumental breaks, followed by those wistful vocals that soar with self-reflection.

Comment of the set 1: Who has an ex-boyfriend who is a little bitch?
Comment of the set 2: What the smell!
If interested, you can read another post (here) that also shines the spotlight on this particular night. That blog post has additional photos of the venue and features the band Annie Jets.
The band is scheduled to play Gold-Diggers on June 6th.
