NFV Song Spotlight: Giselle's Skeletons

Giselle hit the stage at a WFNM night at Hotel Ziggy with the brightest personality. The persona immediately put a smile on the faces of those in the crowd (at least on mine). She opened up the set with the R&B driven song "Convenience" that had her vocals playing with the music octaves. For "Vegas," she made sure that people knew that song was not something she experienced, "It's not about me. It's funny, because people are always like, 'Damn, you are so spiteful.' No, this song is actually about a completely third party. I just heard a story of a story story." It is about a spouse who goes out and returns with the smell of another person's perfume. After finishing the song, she gave a coda of, "So if someone cheats on you in Vegas, tell them to go back and stay there."

Her songs "Cold" and "Game Over" are bookend songs. Both deal with an abusive relationship that she went through in her early 20s. The music videos for the two songs are mini-movies about scientists trying to create a humanoid perfect girlfriend. You can see the video for "Cold" here and the video for "Game Over" here. "Cold" is where the humanoid girlfriend is created and sold. "Game Over" is where a bit of robot revenge takes place.

She ended the set with "Loving You Was Never Planned" which had me flashbacking to the 80s / 90s when Anita Baker and Patti LaBelle ruled the airwaves.

She was kind to respond to a Q&A request with a fabulous replay, which was initially posted on my Instagram account (you can see it here). I like it so much I figured I'd re-post it here.

Q. What is currently inspiring you in terms of music? A. I’m currently finding inspiration for my newer music based off my life, others’ lives and even video games!

Q. What’s a dream venue/festival you’d love to play at and what about it intrigues you? A. A dream venue to perform at… wow! This is a great question. It’s funny because there was a timeframe in my life when I never thought I’d perform at Whisky a Go-Go, but I did! That being said, it would be an honor to one day perform at The Grammys! That intrigues me since it’s a place for music to be celebrated and honored. As for festivals, if I could go back in time Warped Tour would be so cool . . . my inner emo child would feel complete! I’m not sure I fit their vibe 100% but hey, you never know! It is coming back after all so maybe there’s a chance for that to happen one day.

Own final thoughts: Music for me is truly my life. It’s been my safe space since I was just a baby. Music became a tool for me at a very young age to heal the traumas I was facing growing up. It also became a tool to provide peace in my life and for others. I learned the power of music when I was very young and I will never ignore it! Music can do so much. It can inspire, it can heal, it can hurt, it can make things better! My goal has always been to share all the emotions and to help others heal. Some of my songs might be just for fun, and that’s okay too! But even those fun songs have meaning and I truly hope listeners can take away those meanings or even find their own in my music! I appreciate everyone who takes the time to interact with my music!

As for "Skeletons," she slowed the music down for this song. The music started with a nice introspective interplay between her three member backing band. Her vocals blended in perfectly with quiet sadness.

You're living a life full of lies, will you ever tell the truth for once?

Setlist: Convenience, Skeletons, Vegas, Cold, Game Over, Sunshine, Loving You Was Never Planned
