NFV Song Spotlight: Moonfuzz's Hell Week.

Moonfuzz was shredding it throughout their entire set at Permanent Records Roadhouse. The trio includes Heaven Martinez on bass and vocals, Miranda Viramontes on guitar, and Brandi Estrada on drums. They were dressed in black, which helped emphasize their doom rock credentials. The set started off with the aggressive "Golden Girl." Martinez and Viramontes almost immediately went into a faceoff, pushing each other to perform at their very best.

Next up was their song "Hell Week." The song has Martinez screeching out the vocals like a Sunset Strip rock star. Viramontes took a stance, fretting the strings up and down the guitar neck. Estrada on drums didn't leave a single piece of the drum set unused. Hair was flung. Bass and guitar battles were conducted twice. The song drove forward with relentless force.

I don't want your dirty smile.

I love the song title, because it just reminds me of finals week in college.

Comment of the set: This one is one of my favorite songs. It's about sex.

I first came across Moonfuzz when they played an online set, hosted by The Satellite. (If you click on the link, you can see the performance.) It was an acoustic set so I had no clue what I was in for when I finally caught them live at Happy Sundays Long Beach in 2021. Their set at Permanent Records Roadhouse didn't include this specific part from that Happy Sundays set, but I remember Martinez and Viramontes walking to opposite sides of the stage, letting Estrada become the focus. She went off on a multi-minute jam session that had me thinking about the movie Whiplash. It was an amazing moment.

I once argued that we need a "Moon" festival in Los Angeles: Los Angeles bands with the word Moon in their name. The festival would include Lo Moon, Moonfuzz, Moonily, MOONZz, and someone would need to convince Moon Honey to reunite for the festival. There are probably a couple more that could be added to the festival.

Setlist: Golden Girl, Hell Week, Child of the Ocean, Everything That's Mine, Guts (Budgie cover), Friendly Smiles, Intrude.
