NFV Song Spotlight: Me.Kai's Daylight

Me.Kai website describes her music as "a soulful vocal singer/songwriter . . . . genre-blending style encapsulates love for indie soul, heavy bass, and electro-pop." Not listed is that her vocals are smokey smooth. That's what struck me about her set during a WFNM night at Bar Lubitsch

The set started off with her four song EP that is titled Circadian. As per the title of the EP, each song focuses on a different part of the 24 hour day.

Her song "Dawns on You" focused on the morning hours and had an acoustic focus. Wearing a coat of many colors, she said after that song, "It is a little hot in here, I'm going to take this thing off." There were some female screams, "Yes, Sir."

"Daylight" is an homage to the city of Santa Barbara where she currently resides, "this song is about a sunny Santa Barbara afternoon." "Pull Me Close" is about the golden hour, "If you've got anybody that you want to pull close tonight, now is the time to do it." The final song "We Turn On" is about the late night, "wrote the song thinking about the dead of night. So it's got a spooky vibe to it."

"Daylight" is an energy pick me up song. During the afternoon, I'm usually stuck in the office and often just feel uninspired about the job. Maybe I'm wasting time watching a Youtube video. Or maybe I'm researching where bands / singers are playing around town. I just don't want to deal with the boredom of earning a paycheck. Well, this song may be an energy pick-up, but it addresses these sort of feelings.

Lived a whole life since we locked down
Been round the block quite a lot now
Spend the same days in the same town, o-o-own

There's no time to wallow in your sorrows of a job though.

Everything′s gonna be OK
Catch the waves and the ocean spray

Partial setlist: Dawns on You, Daylight, Pull Me Close, We Turn On.
