NFV Song Spotlight: Mikayla McLean's Run!

Who has to rank as one of the bands / singers most happy about being invited to play the WFNM stage? Mikayla McLean who recently played Hotel Ziggy has to make that list. She said towards the end of the set while thanking WFNM, "[thanks for] letting me jump onboard last minute. I've been scheming and trying to get on stage." Someone dropped out at the last minute and she jumped onboard and put on a wonderful set.

What's the first take away that one notices about McLean? Her vocals. A couple blogs (example) I came across said that she takes inspiration from Stevie Nicks. I would say that her vocals on songs "Fool!" and "Run!" are dead ringers for Nicks' vocal style.

Another take away that I noticed during the set at Hotel Ziggy was that there were at least 7 people wearing red t-shirts with McLean's face on the front. I noticed one shirt. And then I noticed another. I saw someone sitting on a couch wearing the t-shirt. I saw another person wearing a leather jacket and there was the t-shirt peaking out. I smiled as I counted the t-shirts in the venue.

There was also that wide smile. The enthusiasm was on full display. After opening with "Fool!," she told the audience, "Thank you so much for coming tonight, guys. Oh My God, this is insane . . . .  My first full show ever with a band."

This all gave her that additional adrenaline to give those Nicks' husky vocals a go. A stand out song of the night was "Run!" Her Youtube page has the following quote, "I tend to write of sadness, heartbreak, and grief, as I explore emotional scars of my past, unhealthy relationships, either platonic or romantic, dysfunctional family dynamics, anxiety, and loss." That seems to apply perfectly to the song.

Don't say something you can't back up
You don't know what to do? Well, you're in luck
'Cause I do
We're through

Setlist: Fool!, Run!, Long Road, What to Do, Casual (Chappell Roan cover), A(pathetic).
