NFV Song Spotlight: Ultraviolet Communication's No Return

I will admit that I was feeling this deep desire to catch some live music. I totally understand that due to the fires that hit Los Angeles starting January 7th that venues needed to shut down due to the potential for the fires to spread (as well as thick smoke that would have made for very uncomfortable situations inside the venues for both the musicians and audience) and a show of empathy. In fact, I was ready to go out on January 8th to Hotel Ziggy to catch Kat French, but then the Sunset Fires flared up and I thought that was a really stupid idea.

Come Sunday, January 12th, I noticed there was a night of music at Club Tee Gee. I decided to head on out. I'm happy I did, because I got to cross paths with Ultraviolet Communication. The band's Instagram page describes the band as a "psychedelic rock trio." I would also include that there are touches of funk and jazz in their repertoire. Per their Bandcamp page, addition information is provided, "the band formed in 2018 through responses to craigslist ads seeking other musicians to jam with." I think that word jam is so appropriate.

Perhaps because a band backed out from the night's bill, the band played a 40 minute set. A couple of their songs were in the 7 to 9 minute range. Their music is a true post punk jam session. Lyrics are brief while their psychedelic trippy rock takes control of the audience's body. Lee Picket on drums shakes the body. Matt Morgan on bass vibrates the body. Josiah Rodriguez on his 18 string guitar tickles the body. What a wonderful feeling.

The band is rather active when it comes to releasing new music. They've released 4 albums between 2020 and 2024. Their most recent album is called Gravitas. This is the album where they really put on their jam session with three songs breaking the 9 minute mark. The song to highlight on this post is "No Return," which is the last song of the album and the last note is played at the 9 minute 21 second mark. It has a massive rock opera opening that would do Meat Loaf proud.

The song's lyrics focus on life suggestions in brief snippets. Are these suggestions good or bad? I suppose that is up to the listener to determine.

Earn your seat at the table . . .
Find yourself and make it right . . .
Absolved of your petty afflictions carry on

Comment of the night by the members of the band, "2025 Disco Ball. The 20s are half over. The roaring 20s indeed. It was just 2020. The year of my life. That was the year of you life? The year of all of our lives."

Don't curse things Ultraviolet Communications. The Roaring 20s of the 1920s quickly dissolved into the Great Depression. But their comments did make me reflect on life. Literally five years ago there were pieces of news about this new virus spreading through Wuhan, China.

Randomness: it was rather chilly inside Club Tee Gee. I noticed one individual brought in a blanket.
