Strangely, the last time I was at Permanent Records Roadhouse was June of 2024. That really needed to change quickly in 2025. I happened to notice via Night Talks that there was an Altadena Wildfire relief event occurring on a Friday night at 6 p.m. What better way to spend a Friday night: donate funds to those impacted by the Eaton Canyon fire and catch a favorite band called Night Talks.

I've got to mention that it took maybe 30 minutes for me to get to the venue. You might be thinking, what's the big deal about that? I only live 3.5 miles from the venue and I usually get there in 10 minutes. Basically, bumper to bumper traffic from Verdugo Road to Eagle Rock Blvd to Cypress Avenue. That's called rush hour traffic and all the way to the venue I was wondering if I could ever recall it being that bad on my way to the venue. Was this unusual? An accident? Street construction somewhere? Police activity? Please not another fire in the area? Of course, I did eventually arrive. I parked my car and as I was walking to the venue, I felt a degree of energy hit my body as I was finally returning to this awesome venue.
When I got there, I had a conversation with Soraya Sebghati of Night Talks. We both enjoy the movies and so I was wondering about her thoughts on the Oscars. The conversation mainly focused on Anora, Conclave and Emilia Perez as those were some of the ten nominated movies that we'd both seen.

It was then time for some live music. Up first was Maryze, a Montreal native who may now be based in Los Angeles (or maybe she's going to still split time between Montreal and Los Angeles, but for the time being we seem to have stolen her away from Canada). She joked during her set that she still pronounces the letter z as zed versus zee like we do here in America, "Please don't kick me out. I just got my VISA."
The set started off with the chill pop sounds of "Too Late" that has a hint of Latin pop influence. Showing off a self-deprecation humor, she expressed her love for "Emo" and the Fall Out Boys with the hope that she wouldn't be kicked out of Permanent Records Roadhouse for this. This humor extended to the fact that she just changed from being a brunette to a blond, "I keep scaring myself in the mirror."

She does come to Los Angeles from Montreal so she sang a couple songs in French: "La Vie En Rose" and "Langue." "Langue" highlights her queer sexuality. She mentioned to the crowd that the word Langue can be translated as tongue and with that gave a wink wink hint to the audience. Per Spotify, that is her number one hit at the moment. The song veers away from the pop sounds of "Too Late" and goes EDM that one imagines would be played in an underground Paris (I guess I should say Montreal) music club.
What's the song that especially caught my attention from this enchanting set? I've got to go with the song "Playing Dress-Up." She introduced the song by saying that she doesn't usually play piano in front of an audience. It is a song that she played solo without her two band mates. It is a song that is a reminiscent reflection on a past relationship. The keyboard was played with a melancholy touch that complimented the quiet vocals.

That there would be still something left to say
That there's no secret hurt unspoken.
Quote of the night: Thanks so much for joining my French class. That's all the French you need to learn [pause to emphasize] to flirt.
Setlist: Too Late, Emo, Wreckage, Playing Dress-up, La Vie En Rose, False Icon, Langue.
