Song Spotlight: Erin Ross' Wilderness

Erin Ross was feeling the sun and the breeze during her WFNM's showcase at Hotel Ziggy. She opened up her set with Michael BublĂ©'s "Feeling Good" which gave everyone an introduction to her multi-octave vocal talent. She let it ripe during the "feeling good" hook moments. She then shifted to her own music. She started it off with the 2024 single release "I Don't Feel The Cold," a love song describing her best friend's marriage.

She then performed her 2022 EP Still Becoming. She mentioned to the audience, "It is a self reflective project. You see a common theme of a mirror or me talking to myself. Or me talking to my younger self. Kind of going around and around." She opened it with an intro song, which on her album is called "Rorrim," mirror spelled backwards. On her EP, she ends it with the song "Mirror."

For her song "Unexpressed," she took a seat. It is a song about her unexpressed feelings towards her family. "It is always hard to sing it so I'm not going to apologize if I cry." "The Letter" is about talking to her younger self. Her set was acoustic, but there were still hints of the recording. Her vocals soared at moments throughout the song, but she kept it under wraps to express the reflection of her current self discussing life to a younger version. The song ends with a spoken poem, "No matter how you came. You're not a mistake. . . A letter to my childhood."

Her song "Wilderness" is about toxic patterns and being fed up with herself. The first part of the song is about her current state at the time of writing the song while the second half is about giving herself a prep talk. The song definitely aligns with her Spotify bio that describes her music as genre-bending. Her guitarist starts the song off with a folk melody and then she joined by showcasing operatic vocals that shifted to a spiritual rhythem. It is an interesting mix of genres that was used throughout the song. The spiritual sounds align with lyrics that hint at religious influences (seen via the title itself): Fear fanned flames of fire and brimstone . . . Oh child hold your head up high . . . Building homes from old brick and stone.

When the final operatic notes were sung, her fans screams and cheered their approval. She stood there for a moment, almost as if she might just have one more song to sing. But no, she told the audience, "I'm just taking in the moment."

Her Spotify bio mentions that she's a Houston native (though her Instagram page mentions she currently resides in San Diego), "From her biracial Dominican-Filipina upbringing . . . Erin is all about fusion . . . Each song overwhelms the senses, changes the atmosphere, and transports the listener to an unearthly place."

Setlist: Feeling Good (Michael Bublé cover), I Don't Feel The Cold, Rorrim, Unexpressed, The Letter, Wilderness.
