Song Spotlight: Charley T's We'll Keep Marching

Charley T (performing name for Charley Tiernan) can belt out those vocals. She played the WFNM showcase at Hotel Ziggy and I was sold from the very first guitar notes of the night. The first song of the set was "We'll Keep Marching." It is an anthem advocating for change. When the song was released a 1.5 years ago, she wrote the following on Instagram, "I was sick of writing love songs so I wrote this. I hope this song motivates people to speak up for what they believe in. Right now I want to use this song to advocate for women’s rights."

With Bonnie Raitt vocals and her guitarist doing the heavy blues, Tiernan sang the song with the passion the topic deserved:

We'll make noise till you hear our voice
Can you feel our rage, oh
We'll keep marching till we've won

Her bio mentions that she grew up in New England and currently resides in Nashville. Prior to her song "Pretty Little Things," she made reference to Nashville, "This is my attempt at a country song. I don't know why I live in Nashville. I'm not country."  That song is a love song (or maybe more accurately anti-love song), "I've broken every chain you kept me strung on. Torn up every dress you made me zip up."

I love how she gave little introductions to her songs. Her song "The Dogs Keep Barking" is about "wanting everyone to f*ck off." "Heaven" is about wanting to get Botox, but not being able to afford it. Her most recent release "Say It" was a rocker that had the crowd singing "Say It" and cheering as the song concluded. Similar to "We'll Keep Marching," it is an advocacy song that surely should catch the ears of those who are out there pushing for social justice.
