New Music Alert: Allie Buckley's "Nothing Sacred"

Allie Crow Buckley has a new song out called "Nothing Sacred." The video has an ancient sacred style to it. The music has a folk tone that includes what feels like what the Druids music might have sounded like. 

Saying Druids is not the appropriate route to take on the music as she writes on an Instagram post:

A small town in Italy carved out of the side of a mountain. An area where the Etruscan people once lived. An ancient pre patriarchal civilization of earth worshippers.

In slide 3 you can see the ‘jukebox and ancient token’ - there was this old school jukebox, and it only operated on lira. The owner of this little wine bar would drop a handful on your table.

That evening, we were walking through the town square and saw the locals all doing this line dance. Naturally I had to join in. Filled to the brim with wine, and pleasantly losing the feeling ‘limb by limb.’

So I should said influenced by the potential ancient sounds of the Etruscans versus the Druids, but honestly I don't know if I've ever heard of the Etruscans -- other than maybe they were mentioned in my high school European history class way back when.

How is the present connected to the past? Sometimes when we allow life to slow down just for a moment, we can feel it.

Online Quarantine Sets: Version 94

School Night this past Monday started off with Allie Buckley. I came across Allie Buckley back in 2018 during her residency at the Bootleg Theater. I recall her having those who were also on the bill with her that night join her on stage for various songs. One such person who opened was Johanna Samuels who wasn't ready when called upon and out went the call, "Johanna? Johanna?"

Her School Night set started with the sounds of an electronic organ coming out of her synth. I noticed how she loves playing chords and letting those shine. Her vocals had a combined gospel and country sound. Her eyes smiled at the camera whenever she took a looking at the virtual School Night audience that was watching the recording. One of her songs was about her boyfriend who went to Peru to take ayahuasca.

Ai Bendr came up next. She's an Ann Harbor, Michigan native who is currently living in Los Angeles. She opened her set with the song "Runaway." For me, there was an interesting contrast going on. She wore a Snoop Dogg t-shirt while she played a ukulele for a song that had a definite beach vibe. She later switched to keys on her next song where the lights were shaded blue to keep with the moody tone of the song. I loved her after-set interview where she showed off a solid level of confidence. It wasn't an arrogant level of confidence, it was an internal level of confidence.

Merci Mercy closed out the set from Australia. Her music had a timeless sense of poetry. Her vocals included the occasional drawl. She played her personal favorite song called "Something You Like." The song started off with a soft country folk sound and then turned into a pop sensation, "I wake up, we break up, without any make up."

The Wild Reeds at the Bootleg Theater

The Bootleg Theater was packed on a Monday night as fans were their to catch The Wild Reeds.

Opening up was Johanna Samuels. She has that singer-songwriter style. She showed her wordsmith style with a couple on stage quips:

"This song is sad, but it sounds happy, but that's okay."

"I'm so happy to smell the perfume that Allie has."

The Wild Reeds was the middle band. They were doing a free show in preparation of their upcoming tour.

What did I notice: one of the musicians wanted a drink of water. Her band mate had a water bottle next to her feet. She tried to get the attention of her band mate who didn't see her. So she made a grab for the water bottle with a look of guilt.

I do believe one of the lyrics that they sung went like this, "It hurts babe when you smear my name." After the song, one of them said, "It's good we feel things."

The Wild Reeds, they definitely go wild on stage.

Allie Buckley closed out the night. She's the residency musician for the month of March. She had The Wild Reeds and Johanna Samuels join her on separate songs. One amusing moment was when Johanna Samuels was supposed to join her on stage. "Johanna? Johanna?" She didn't show up. Well, the show had to go on so Allie began singing the song. In the middle of the song, Johanna finally showed up in the stage area. She made a move to go on the stage, but hesitated. A friend had to convince her to go on stage.

Of interest: The last time I saw The Wild Reeds was way back in 2013 at The Satellite. Apparently, I've been catching up with bands that I haven't seen in years. I also recently saw Summer Twins for the first time since 2012. Time does fly.
