It is probably due to my desire to catch local bands before they gain a following that explains why I like to catch opening bands. I've occasionally shown up at venues an hour early (because I simply can't judge when the first band hits the stage) just so that I can catch the opener. And by desire to catch local bands, I mean being one of the first photographers to snap some concert photos.
Side note: that theory of being one of the first photographers to snap photos could also apply to the last band of the night, but depending on when that band hits the stage, there is something called needing to wake up the next morning to go to work. Trade-offs in life.

That is how I caught
Night Party. Now I didn't show up an hour. I sort of have an understanding at how
Zebulon schedules their bands so I got to the venue about 15 minutes early. Not earlier than some in the crowd and just early enough to head to the front of the stage and get my camera ready for photography.

The band comprises of
Katrina Urton and
Daniel James. Per their
bio the band started up in 2023 and was based on a suggestion from James' wife. Their first Instagram post was in September of that year so I'd say they've been around for a little over a year. Their website also lists the Zebulon as only their third show as a band and their only music venue show. So in some ways, I'd say this was their first official show and the initial two were prep-type sets. Their friends came out in force to support the band. I would estimate that there were actually more people at Zebulon to support Night Party than the other two bands on the bill.

The band has a shoegaze touch that brings along a slow meditative sound that has flashbacks to Mazzy Star. Mazzy Star has the song "Fade Into You." Night Party has the song "All That Fades." Urton is the lead vocalist while James provides background vocals and plays the guitar and keys.

The crowd was definitely there to provide their encouragement. At the end of each song, the crowd cheered loudly that always resulted in a wide smile from Urton. As for the song "All That Fades." The song starts with outer space psychedelic tracks. Urton comes in with deep vocals that are near void of emotion, numbness, "
I'll wait in the hallway. I wait because of you. You say that you can't stay. I stay because of you." The guitar play by James is simple strumming. As the drums kick in, Urton and James share the vocals that then shift into emotional despair while the music grows in intensity. A song of one still in love while the other has decided to move on?
As for a little more info on the band members. James has backed Hayley Williams of Paramore and Urton is married to DIIV drummer Ben Newman.
